Our Living Room | Andie Mitchell

We’ve been in our house for 4 years now, and for 3 of those years, the front room of our house—the formal living room, the first thing you see from the front door—was lovingly called “the soccer room,” which of course was because it was a big empty space where my husband, Daniel, set up a large soccer goal so that he could play soccer at any moment! It was very cool for him and very mortifying for me. So last year we decided it was time to move the soccer to the basement and furnish the room. I am so happy with the transformation. (Scroll down to the end of the post for the list of where I got furniture, lamps, curtains, etc.)

Transitional Style Living Room

My home style is transitional, a blend of traditional and contemporary (modern). I’m drawn to all things light and bright, neutrals, the grounding quality of warm wood tones and natural woven elements like jute, wicker, and rattan. I love the color blue. And while I enjoy a lot of the modern design trends (mid-century clean lines, white sofas, neutral color schemes, lots of woven textures), I ultimately want my decor to feel timeless. So I weave traditional, vintage pieces (think mahogany end tables, vintage-looking rugs) into that contemporary aesthetic because they a.) never go out of style, and b.) add richness and character (otherwise, an all-modern look can feel a little cold and flat).
