Eating popsicles is a core hot summer day memory for many of us as kids. And I’m pretty sure it will be for my kids too.

There’s nothing wrong with store-bought ice pops, but when you make your own popsicles, you can control what goes in them–including how much added sugar (if any) they contain.

A month’s worth of dinners, figured out for you.

Grab my 4-week meal plans with recipes, shopping lists, and picky eater tips for every meal.

These healthy homemade popsicles are made with whole fruits and a little bit of honey (or not!) and are a great way to:

  • Avoid food waste by using up extra produce
  • Get your kids a serving of fruit (many kids aren’t getting enough)
  • Make something together with your kids
  • Avoid artificial ingredients like food dyes

Simple Ingredients for Fruit Popsicles

  • Favorite Fruits: You can use fresh, frozen (defrosted), or canned (drained) fruit
  • Honey: Feel free to skip this or swap with maple syrup or other favorite sweetener

How to Make 2-Ingredient Fruit Popsicles

Place the fresh fruit (or frozen fruit that’s been defrosted) in a blender and puree until smooth. If the fruit mixture feels too thick and isn’t blending well, drizzle in a little bit of water, coconut water, or 100% fruit juice such as apple juice.

You could also strain out the seeds and any pulpy pieces after blending, though I like to leave all of that in.

This recipe calls for three cups of fruit, which makes about 1 1/2 cup of fruit puree.

That amount filled a little more than three of these large ice pop pouches but will obviously go further with smaller molds.

What kinds of different fruits work best?

I made these with fresh strawberries, blueberries, watermelon, and pineapple. I also tried fresh peaches, defrosting them a bit in the microwave before blending.

Taste and add honey as needed.

How much honey should you use?

Every fruit is different, so I suggested blending the fruit and tasting it before adding honey. Some fruit mixtures may not need as much honey as others. Or feel free to skip it entirely.

Pour into your favorite popsicle molds. The pouches shown here are Zipzicles. I also love my Zoku reusable popsicle molds.

You can also use small paper cups covered with plastic wrap, then poke a popsicle stick through, set cups on a baking sheet, and freeze.

  • To make orange popsicles: Oranges, clementines, or orange juice

Variations to Try

  • Make a creamy version using fruit, honey, and milk (such as coconut milk, almond milk, or regular dairy milk)
  • Make yogurt popsicles (here’s my easy recipe for Homemade Yogurt Tubes)
  • Give the popsicles a veggie boost by adding fresh baby spinach to the fruit puree

TIP: To get the frozen popsicles to release from their molds more easily, run them under warm water or set them in a dish of warm water for 30 seconds or so.

What kind of popsicle mold is this?

The pouches shown here are Zipzicles. I also love my Zoku reusable ice pop molds (and I do strive to be a friend of the environment).

What are the best popsicles from the store?

We love Outshine popsicles, which taste like their flavors because they contain real fruit. They come in a variety of flavors (our faves are strawberry, lemon, and watermelon).

Ingredients

  • 3 cups fresh fruit of your choice, such as strawberries, watermelon chunks, blueberries
  • 2 tablespoons honey

Instructions

  1. Puree fruit in the blender until smooth. Taste and sweeten as desired.
  2. Pour into ice pop molds of your choice and freeze until hard.

Notes

Feel free to strain fruit puree mixture before freezing, especially if it contains a lot of seeds (as with blackberries, for instance)

Feel free to skip the honey entirely.
