Breathe your way to calm and better energy

There is strong evidence to suggest that energy boosting breathwork can be better than caffeine, plus it helps to relieve you of stress. Use the power of breath to create an incredible feeling of energy, clarity and focus through your body, as recommended by Louise Murray, a Health & Mindfulness Coach and Naturya Ambassador.

“Practicing a regular, mindful breathing exercise can be calming and energizing and can even help with stress-related health problems ranging from panic attacks to digestive disorders.

If you are not breathing optimally, you’re robbing yourself of energy. The way you breathe may be causing you to feel tired, fatigued, foggy, and uninspired. This is because proper, controlled breathing ensures an optimal oxygen-carbon dioxide exchange. This is vital for high energy and mental alertness levels. Since oxygen is the breath of life, it’s rocket fuel for the body and mind.

Many people fail to breathe deeply when they feel tense, which is one reason they may feel zapped at the end of a stress-filled day. The general principles of correct breathing are to make it deeper, slower, quieter, and more regular. Doing so helps you force more oxygen into your cells, which slows heart rate, lowers blood pressure, and improves circulation, ultimately providing more energy.

Try the “4, 7, 8” breathwork exercise. This is a great technique if time is precious as it only takes 3 minutes. You can integrate breathing into your daily living very easily — you simply have to be conscious of it.

With this exercise, we’re focusing on deep, diaphragmatic breathing. This means we are not using our chest or upper body to breathe, but we are engaging our lower belly as we inhale and exhale. On the inhale, your lower belly should rise outwardly. On the exhale, the lower belly moves inwardly, towards the navel. These movements draw air into the lungs, and not just the upper lungs, as in chest breathing. Diaphragmatic breathing fills every part of your lungs, including the lower parts. The abdominal muscles expand and contract around all of the organs of digestion which will assist them in functioning better.

Do this simple breathing exercise twice a day or whenever you feel yourself losing steam or need to calm yourself:

Deeply exhale with a whoosh sounds.

Then deeply inhale for 4, hold for 7, exhale through the mouth for 8.

Repeat for 4 breaths.”
